Forever on the wing

There’s nowhere better to fly than New York, really. Even if it seems like the buildings set up their own air pressure and wind patterns— no, maybe because of that. They make for unpredictable winds, sudden gusts that catch you just as you round a corner and blow you off course like a leaf, tumbling end over end in the air. The abrupt updrafts that send you soaring, stories’ worth of windows flashing by in mere seconds and then just as abruptly you’re floating in a sea of calm air once more.
But it’s the city itself with its incredible packed vertical heights that make flying really the most enjoyable. Most places, there’s nothing up above but empty air, and while that has a certain geography of its own, it’s still empty. No obstructions, no obstacles, none of the barriers we’re so used to navigating on the ground. At first it’s really freeing, but before long it starts feeling more than a bit lonely.
But this city is nothing like that. Yeah, most of the people are down there, on the ground— but they’re up here, too, in the buildings, on roofs, behind windows, on balconies. There are never-ending nooks and crannies to explore, gargoyles, dovecots, architectural ornaments, billboards, scaffolding, bridges suspended in the air. The place is alive, from its depths to its heights, and all of it open for me to explore.
